Makeup is my favourite topicĀ  – and it all begins with your base.

So what is a base? Generally your base consists of concealer, foundation and powder.

Concealer

Concealer is denser than foundation and is great at covering up shadows from below the eye area, redness or discolouration. A little goes a long way. I use a cream and opaque concealers rather than liquids as I find they wear better and don’t travel on the skin.

Tip: Choose a concealer that matches your natural skin tone or is a shade lighter if you have more darkness. I prefer concealers that are golden/yellow based rather than pinky based as they tend to look more natural.

Foundation

There are many different types of foundations to choose from and the main thing to consider is the look you want to achieve for your skin.

Sheer foundations look the best because they allow your skin to feel and look natural and fresh. Medium foundations give more coverage and are therefore more obvious on your skin. Remember, foundation is used to balance skin tone, not to cover your entire face, so use it only where needed. If it matches your skin perfectly, you won’t even see it and it will blend in perfectly.

Tip: The most natural looking finish is created by using little or no foundation or
a little concealer where needed followed by a light powder isĀ  and great for day time healthy glow.

Powder

Powder is used to set your makeup by holding foundation and concealer in place. It also reduces any oiliness or shine where it’s not wanted.

Your powder should match the tone of your foundation and be practically invisible. Powder that is not can look chalky or heavy, and looks horrible!

Tip: Keep loose powder for use at home and carry a pressed powder compact with you during the day for touch-ups.

So to recap in order of application:

  • Start with undereye concealer first (blended well with fingertips).
  • Follow with foundation only placed where needed (or use concealer instead if you are going without foundation).
  • Finish with a light dusting of powder to set makeup.

Now you are done – your skin should look even, fresh and natural.
